J.G Macdonald, governor, E.R. Union PoorhouseJohn Graham Macdonald, governor of Easter Ross Union Poorhouse 1870/71 – 1901.
Born circa 1833, Currie, Midlothian – died 24 May 1903, Berwick on Tweed. Gave up his job and moved to live with his daughter Catherine in Berwick on Tweed when his wife Agnes who was matron died in May 1901. John was a baker before enlisting for 10 years as a private in The 1st Bengal fusiliers on the 2nd June 1852. In October 1860 he was injured in the left arm by a musket ball and returned to England as unfit for duty in June 1861 where he was awarded a Chelsea Out Pension of 9d a week. He became a warder at Edinburgh prison and married Agnes Kennedy the sister of one of his fellow officers. The couple had three children in Edinburgh before taking up their position in the poor house in 1870/71 where they had a further 4 children.

Wonderful photograph. I am researching one of his sons John Angus Macdonald (1871-1953) who lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He became Mayor of Ilkeston 1913-1916. Buried All Saints church Kirk Hallam, Derbyshire 12 January 1953.
