Scotsburn Road, Tain, pre-WWII

All the buildings shown in this picture have now gone. The long low building was a garage owned by brothers called Urquhart (Ken & Hector?). Immediately above this is the Mansfield Farm steading and farm workers houses beyond that. The wall to the right of the garage is the beginning of Ross the Dairy's property, the last one at the foot of Scotsburn Road. The whole area is now occupied by Scotsburn Court sheltered housing, Tain Health Centre and a car park.

No. 20 must have been the address of the Easter Ross Union Poorhouse, known as Arthurville, which was situated on Scotsburn Road just to the south of Tain. Parts of it (the later extensions) were knocked down but the original building was retained as a private house and other houses built on the site. The development is known as "Arthuville Gardens". I will try to post a photo of the poorhouse sometime soon.

During my geneology research I have come across a number of death registrations (1938-1942) where the place of death was recorded as 20 Scotsburn Road, Tain. This was not their usual residence and the folk concerned are from Dingwall, Ardgay and surrounding area. The person registering the death was not a relative and the qualification of the person registering the death was given as occupier. Anybody know what was at number 20, a Doctors or a care home if such a thing existed then ? Cheers

I have just found some death information on my g-grandmother Isabella MacKay, she too was one of those with an address of 20 Scotsburn Rd. Someone else has suggested it was the poorhouse. I too would love to see a picture of it. Thanks
