Macpherson's Central Emporium, Tain High Street

This Post Card picture could have been taken late 19th/early 2oth Century. The Emporium was still very much in existence in 1910 when it appeared in several adverts in the 1910 edition of the Easter Ross & District Almanack - incidentally printed by Macpherson. As can be seen it was a Stationers, Tobacconist and sold Fancy Goods (including leather goods). It was also a Toy Shop and sold musical instruments.

One of the posters leaning against the building states, "Wanted - 20,000 men- harvest work in Canada", reflecting the fact that they operated as Shipping Agents.

Macphersons also had a printing business. One of the adverts in the Almanack is for, "Herbert Taylor Macpherson (formerly MacPherson Bros.), St Duthus Printing works, Tower Street." Another advert is for a John Macpherson with a similar business in Invergordon, possibly the brother alluded to.

Macpherson Invergordon produced numerous postcards in the early 20th century. There are several examples on the Invergordon image library as well as pictures of his shop in the High Street.

Herbert Macpherson also had a music supplies shop across the road where the Co-operative is now at 7-9 High Street selling musical instruments and sheet music. The Emporium was also still in existence at this time in 1914, advertised in Easter Ross by Alexander Polson.
