Fun at the Camp

This World War I Army Camp housing Black Watch soldiers was located near Nigg. The huts appear to be constructed of corrugated iron but efforts have been made to brighten up the surroundings. Note the neatly laid out and well maintained flower beds.

The railway reached Tain in 1864. Tain station used to be a very busy place and employed c30 people in its heyday. It had several sidings, sheds, a water tank and a turntable but is now unmanned.
Most of Tain’s provisions arrived by rail. Before motor vehicles became more available horses and carts were used to transport the goods from the station.
This picture shows the station in the 1960's when it was still manned.

Charles James Embleton, seen here with his father, George Embleton, served on HMS Exeter as a stoker while it was engaged in the Battle of the River Plate against the German ship the Graf Spee during WWII. The Embleton family lived in Fountain Road, Tain. Charlie, as he was known, was later presented with a silver tea service and gold wristlet watch from the town to commemorate his part in such an epic incident. The tea service was returned to the town a few years ago and is currently in the museum's keeping.

This scene shows the Lovat Scouts (so called because they were founded by Lord Lovat) riding along the High Street on their way to camp on either Tain Links or the Morrich More, probably during or leading up to WWI.

Here the Lovat Scouts are lined up with horses and horse drawn cariages in front of their camp on the Fendom. As with Picture #0152.90
it was probably taken during or leading up to WW1. Highlanders were valued for their stalking and shooting skills and therefore made up a large part of the scout troops.

This view from the shore shows a Territorial Army (affectionately known as the
