Scout Camp 1939 or 1940. My father, Donald George Munro (DG)is in the front row 2nd from left and was about 15 at the time that this was taken.He thinks the Tain Scout Group were at Carbisdale Castle in this photo.

We believe this picture of a float was constucted by the Tain Scouts as part of the Tain Carnival of c1946/7. They are obviously making a social/political commentary. In the background is the old Co-op stores at the top of King Street, now occupied by Mr. Shafi's drapery business. Attached to this building on the left we can see the old bakehouse now long gone. This bakehouse was, among others, owned at one time by James Robertson, baker, who was Provost of Tain 1921-24. The last private baker to use it was Alexander before it was taken over by the Co-op.

The onlookers watch carefully as the serious business of an obviously crucial measure is taking place during a game of bowls at the St Duthus Bowling club.

Today's bowlers might not be too happy with the state of the bowling green which appears anything but smooth.

A sizeable crowd awaits the traditional opening of throwing the first jack by Mrs Fowler, wife of Provost Fowler.

She is the splendidly dressed lady, including a large white hat, and he is the gentleman to the right of the table wearing a black hat.

This splendid picture of the 1949 Tain Pipe Band was taken at Invergordon Games. It must have been warm under those skins. Unfortunately we have no names for these well rigged out gentlemen.

Captain John B W Dewar lived in Harperfield House, Sandilands, Lanarkshire, but frequently came to Tain and had many associations with the area. He would stay in the Royal Hotel but also either at Culpleasant or nearby when taking part in shooting. In this vicinity, there is a grave complete with granite gravestone, dedicated to

This shows the Edderton Dramatic Society who performed MacBeth. The play was produced by K.M.Cameron from Balblair in 1900. There were two Crans and five Airds in the production.

This a copy of a post card shows Castlecraig Golf Course and clubhouse c1910. The Nigg Ferry Hotel is the building behind the clubhouse. See also Picture# No 2390.1

This picture copied from a post card was given to the museum in 1985 with an accompanying note which states the scene is as the donor remembered it 70 years earlier. The turret in the middle foreground is that of Dunskaith House which is now demolished. Other information provided was that the cottage above the turret was occupied by a George Gibson and his two sons; on the right is the Ferry Inn and back left is Craig Lodge. The white spot beside, middle left edge is the white box marking the 1st tee of the old Nigg Golf Course.

This Photo was taken by William Smith c1891. It shows members of the St Duthus Lodge (No. 1100) of Oddfellows, a society similar to the Freemasons, on parade. The Oddfellows Hall in Upper King Street was used up until the 1960's when it became a medical centre. It was unfortunately demolished a few years ago to make way for luxury flats.

This picture is of the original clubhouse built when Tain Golf Club (then called St Duthus Golf Club) was first established in 1890-91. It lay on the far side of the Plaids road from Tain and was superceded by a new structure in 1911 (Picture #59). The foundations were cleared and done up and a large stone placed in the centre bearing a brass plaque by the TOGS (Tain Occasional Golfers Society) for the club's 100th Centenary in 1990.

This clubhouse was constructed after the golf course was extended to the Tain side of the Plaids Road. It was built round the original building which was dragged by sledge from its original site on the far side of the Plaids Road. See Picture #65 for the original clubhouse.

This group of 41 people are dressed in fancy costumes for a biblical play. The Missionary Lighthouse Group was a girls' association started c. 1900 by a Miss Macdonald who had wished to be a missionary. It was carried on by Margaret MacBean Ross and later restarted by Jane Macbean Ross at Everest, Knockbreck Road, Tain.

This postcard was sent from Fearn to Edinburgh in 1903. The view is looking across The Links from Gallow Hill towards the railway line with the slaughter house beyond on the right and the goods shed is the large building middle left.
The first golf in Tain was played on The Links. In 1890 the St Duthus Golf Club was formed and a proper course set out east of the Plaids Road. However, golf continued to be played on the links for a long time afterwards.

This was taken at the start of the Easter Ross Cycling Club's 12 mile race in 1889. The participants are wearing caps with club badges. The picture was taken at the rear of Urquhart's shoe shop in Tain High Street, and A. Urquhart won third prize.
