| "Do you have information or photographs of Thomas Summers West of Portmahomack who was a pupil at TRA from about 1937-ish? Tom West had a very distinguished carreer as an analytical chemist; professor, Fellow of the Royal Society and Commander of the British Empire. Tom died in February 2010 and the Trustees of the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund, of which I am the Trust Secretary, are planning to establish an academic fellowship in celebration of his life and work. | "There were never any cotton mills in the Tain area, as far as I am aware, but there was a woollen mill at Highmills and possibly linen spinning before that. Also a saw mill at one point and of course grain mills going way back several centuries. " Margaret Urquhart 05 January 2011 |
| "Hi Highmills is named after a mill at a crossroads on Hartfield Road I think. You take the A9 about 2 miles out of Tain back to Inverness and you come to a crossroads you turn right onto a single track road and go about 2.5 miles and you come to another crossroads and it is in front of you in the trees. Her name was Mabel Ross (when she married it became Mabel Niclasen), born around 1912 time, and lived in Tain with her family. | "Hello, I am researching the Dingwall famlies, who I believe married Ross lasses many times. My John Dingwall came from around Dingwall, Rosshire, and served in the 88th Regiment of Foote, from 1759 - 1763, at which time he was interred into the colonia at Strelitz Perthshire. I have his musters details from Strelitz, which confirm is place of birth, his age being 29 years old and married with no children. This document would have been written between 1764 and 1767. I am seeking advise as to how I can confirm his parentage. I have transcribed the OPR'S for Tain and Fodderty, and awaiting the Dingwall film. I have an 1888 family portrait (with 8 children) of Harry Munro, his wife Christina McBain, who emigrated to Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada in about 1865. They were from Hilton of Tain (Hilton Mills), where Harry was a "Wood Saw Miller" at the time of their marriage in 1861. Family folklore had the McBain Family living in 'Aldee Cottage" which I believe to be at Aldie, near Hilton. I can send it as an attachment if I have an email address.
