United Free Church (now Parish Church)

This Church was built towards the end of the 19th century (1890-91) and was designed by a local firm of architects, Andrew Maitland & Sons. Its Gothic style with traceried windows and galleries etc. makes it very different from most Scottish churches. It was originally built for the Free Church who later united with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church in 1900. Today it is the Parish Church of Tain.

I went to church here with my Mum and Dad and attended the 'Dolly Class' in the church hall and Sunday School and Bible Class. I was a Sunday School Teacher here in the early 1960s with Chrissie Ross and Nan Beattie before I left to do my Teacher Training in Aberdeen. I remember the Revd. W. Begg and family as I was growing up. I also sang in the church choir alongside my uncle Lawrence Benson under the guidance of Miss Ross. Stanley, who worked with uncle Laurie in Wallace & Frasers, was the organist in those days. In the late 60s Andrew McAlpine the then minister gave Allan and I a blessing on our marriage. He also christened our daughter Karen in 1970.

Vi,
Minor correction. My father's name was Alexander. He retired rom the church c1975 and lived at Logie Easter for some years after leaving Tain. I still try to go to Tain each year and stay in the old manse, now the Golf View.

Apologies Sandy! I remember now that your father was Alexander and that it was your big brother who was Andrew and I remember your sister Annette. I don't get to Tain much nowadays as all my siblings are here in the North East of England. Best wishes
Vi
