POWs helping at Arabella

This picture was taken at harvest time on one of the Arabella holdings in 1946. Mrs Jean Macdonald (nee Ross) is seen with her sister Molly (married name Ferguson) to her left , her daughter Margaret (later Macleod) on her right and surrounded by a group of prisoners of war who were helping with the harvesting.
In 1919 the Land Settlement (Scotland) Act extended the powers of the Scottish Board of Agriculture & Fisheries so they could buy farms and divide them as appropriate into small holdings which returning forces men could take up. This led to the sub-division of some former large farms, including in Easter Ross, in the 1920s & 1930s. The Arabella small holdings were part of this scheme. Other places in Easter Ross where Dept. of Agriculture small holdings were created were - the Arboll area near Inver; and an area near Fearn.
Local resident Ian Wallace and Tain & District Museum are currently working on a project about the Arabella area in general and the holdings in particular. If anyone has any information about these or any other similar holdings in Easter Ross please contact us at info@tainmuseum.org.uk
