Hugh MacIntyre, Snuff Mull

This fine ram's horn snuff mull with a silver lid and silver final set with a cairngorm stone bears the inscription "Hugh MacIntyre of Culpleasant 1796 OBT 18872 and the motto "Troimh Chruadal". Hugh MacIntyre was born at Croy but held the feu for Culpleasant from c1862/63. His widow still had the feu up till c1900. The ruins of Culpleasant House (see Picture #198 and Picture #377) are now engulfed by forest.

Intriguingly, the snuff mull was found by a Dutch antique dealer in Johannesburg, South Africa. It would be interesting to know its history and how it ended up there.
