Arthurville (Poorhouse) Residents

Another picture from the Easter Ross Union Poorhouse - see also Picture #406 Our information says c 1910 but this may be an earlier photograph. It shows a row of staff at the back with some of the residents in the two front rows. The number of inmates rose from about 32 at the 1841 Census to 78 by the 1891 census going down again to about 40 in 1901. As can be seen, residents varied in age from babes in arms up to 70+. Sometimes there were whole families staying there at a time and there might be up to about a dozen or more of school age. They came mainly from the parishes of Easter Ross but occasionally from further afield. On later death certificates (1920s) the address is given as 20 Scotsburn Road instead of the Easter Ross Union Poorhouse.

Researching a Johan (Hannah) McLennan 17 Mellon Udrigle, Laide.Her Death certificate records her death at 20, Scotsburn Road, 24, April, 1959 aged 76 years.She left Mellon Udrigle in 1935 after the death of her Mother Isabella McLean and went into service at Flowerdale Estate, Gairloch.Her Death Certificate allso mentions that her usual place of residence had been C/O McKenzie, 26 Sand, Laide.Further research required .
