Dr Elizabeth Macbean Ross in Bakhtiari costume
Photo of Dr Elizabeth Ness Macbean Ross in Bakhtiari costume taken in about 1909. She was born in Tain in 1878 and studied medicine at Glasgow University graduating in 1901. For several years she was the local doctor on Colonsay and Oronsay and left in 1907 to go to Iran. She worked with the Bakhtiari tribe in the Zagros Mountains in the west of Iran, with long periods out of contact with other Europeans, and wrote a book about her time there. She worked her way home from Iran as a ship's doctor, srudied tropical medicine in London, went to Japan on the Glenlogan as the first woman doctor on a liner and died of typhus in 1915 while working as a military doctor in Serbia. She is buried there at Kragujevatz.
