Tain & District Museum Year: 0Highland Washing, Alness
This hand tinted Post Card image chooses to illustrate the practice in earlier times of women in the Highlands using a local stream or river to wash the family clothes. Wooden tubs were filled with water from the stream and the clothes or blankets were trampled on with bare feet. (See picture #385). No doubt this was deemed quaint and therefore a subject likely to induce visitors to purchase the Post Card.
Modern parents might be a bit more fearful of taking their children so near such a seemingly powerful flowing body of water.
