"Old Chisholm, the baker", Tain
This William Smith studio photo would probably be taken around the end of the 19th/ beginning of the 20th Century. It shows 3 generations of Chisholms - "Old Chisholm" himself, Duncan Chisholm his son who became a lawyer in Ontario and his grandson, Duncan's son. "old Chisholm" was related through marriage to John Gallie, Grocer in Tain. (See Picture #73)

I am wondering who the grandson is. If the photo was taken in 1900, William Craig b. 1864 would be 36; Duncan Henry b. 1867 would be 33; John Douglas b. 1878 would be 22. It must be the latter and by his looks, the photo was taken earlier.

As with most of our photo collection we know very little about the subjects especially as regards dates for the photos. We have only recently acquired the genealogy information you quote here. and I had not got round to analysing it yet. Thanks for pointing this out. It does indeed seem that the photo must be taken earlier than we thought. As to which grandson....? Perhaps someone in Canada may see this and provide the answer?

I am from Canada and the people in the picture are my wife's g-grandfather and gg-grandfather. Thanks to Katherine Broome for connecting us up with the picture. We have an original photo of Duncan Chisholm and he matches this photo exactly! He was appointed senior judge of Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada in 1896

My earlier comment was incorrect. Seeing that Old Chisholm died in 1884, the young boy could be William Craig b 1864 or Duncan Henry Jr. b 1867

Could someone please describe how "Old Chisholm" was related to John Gallie? I too have connections to Gallie, and would love to learn more. Thank you,

My father was born in 1898, so, obviously, didn't remember the visit when this photo was taken. Was it a later visit by Duncan, or was it just a story that he heard from his mother? She was a grand daughter of John Gallie 1790-1878 by his first wife. He was the shoemaker, not the grocer. Old Chisholm was married to John's sister, Mary 1797-1882.

"Old Chislom" - William Chisholm b 1794 - was married to Mary Gallie. John Gallie b 1790 was her brother. Their parents were Abner Gallie and Ann Rioch. I have Abner's father as John Gallie, b 1734 in Nigg, Scotland
