Count de Serra Largo & Family, Tarlogie

Peter Alexander Cameron Mackenzie became the Count de Serra Largo. After coming to Tain, he lived in Tarlogie House and both he and his wife took an active part in the life of the Tain area. They are seen here with their children - Cecil, Percy, Lionel, Raoul, Zsa Zsa, Maimie and Edward. This is one of a number of photocopies from the family album given to the museum by a grandson of the Count.

This is a quote from the Singer Sewing Machine Site:

George Ross McKenzie, Singer's fourth president, "entered the company a mechanic, and retired a millionaire." A pious, driven Scot, McKenzie took a salary of $100, 000 per year, but built his fortune through his Singer stocks and judicious real estate investments. McKenzie was a tough taskmaster who ran the company as though it were his own. He crisscrossed the Atlantic 55 times on company business, and sent his five sons and a nephew to take charge of key Singer operations around the globe.

And from the same source:

Singer President George McKenzie's nephew Peter was named the Count of Serra Largo by the King of Portugal for mysterious services rendered while working as Singer's agent in Brazil, and retired with his Brazilian wife and seven children to baronial splendour in Scotland
