My father, Andrew Gardiner and his younger brother Walter are seated in the front row. Dad is furthest left and Uncle Walter is in the middle of the row. I would think that early 30s is accurate as Dad was born in 1916 and looks to be about 15 or 16 years old in this picture.

The fourth girl from the right is Catherine Mackay who is the twin sister of Eileen Mackay who is seventh from the right. Catherine is my mother in law and lives with us in London, Eileen is living in Strathpeffer. Eileen says it was taken in 1935.

John Vass is my uncle and elder brother of my father (also Hugh). My father was born and bred in Balintore, which is a fishing village about 7 miles from Tain. After attending the Academy John Vass was a student at Aberdeen University and graduated with Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees. He practised as a minister in the Church of Scotland in Lossiemouth, Elgin and (lastly) Aberdeen. His parents, my grandparents, were Hugh and Catherine (Katie) Vass of Ross Street Balintore.

More about Catherine Darby (nee Mackay) and Eileen Mackinnon (nee Mackay) - 4th and 7th respectively from the right in the girls' row. These twin daughters of the Manse at Nigg reached 90 years old on 14th April 2007.
Added by Susan Catherine Mackay Norris nee Darby on 29 April 2007.
