My Greatgrandfather was John Mc Lelland, who was the minister at Westray around 1890. Can anyone tell me where he was born? Thanks Kingsley Laidlaw kingann34@blueyonder.co.uk

Estelle, this is a brilliant resource - especially as people who access the site can respond - useful when you need help to identify photos! Rosemary would be thrilled.

A great site!

Are you interested at all in photos of emigrants from Tain? I have an 1888 family portrait (with 8 children) of Harry Munro, his wife Christina McBain, who emigrated to Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada in about 1865. They were from Hilton of Tain (Hilton Mills), where Harry was a "Wood Saw Miller" at the time of their marriage in 1861. Family folklore had the McBain Family living in 'Aldee Cottage" which I believe to be at Aldie, near Hilton.

I can send it as an attachment if I have an email address.

Hi

Am looking for a copy of the photograph taken of the staff at Tarrel. It is in the display at the historic display in the very old church near, I think, Port Mahomack. The staff was very large and I believe includes my great granfather William Urquhart who would have been the farm grieve.

It does not appear to be in your image library - can you help?

Cheers

Merren

My father in law Iain Sutherland has just died. He has left us a family tree and many paper cuttings. Murdoch Sutherland was his grandfather and he lived and died in Lochslin Cottage in Tain. Does any one have a photograph of Lochslin Cottage or remember Murdoch Sutherland 1865 to 1947. He was married to Margaret Cattanach. I look forward to hearing from you.

The site is good but lacks the interest tboth the Cromarty & Invergordon sites have with a lot of up to date interest as well as historical. People & events from more relatively modern times I feel would generate a lot more interest. I visit the Cromarty & Invergordon daily
Added by on 15 August 2005.

We would like to point out that unlike the Cromarty and Invergordon sites mentioned in the previous comment, this is specifically a museum site and the main purpose of the Image Library is to make our photo archive accessible to more people. At the same time we hope to gain more information about the images. However, present day pictures are the archive of the future and when time permits we may put some more recent images up also. The person who contributed the comment may find some items more to his/her liking by visiting the Tain website (see Links).

Any information Murdo McKenzie who left Tain in the 1880s to turn huge cattle ranches in Colorado and then Texas? The ranch in Texas, the Matador, was owned by a group of Scottish investors.

My great great grandfather was James Gordon, police inspector at Tain from 1865 to 1884 (and afterwards superintendent at Stornoway and chief constable at Dingwall). Does anyone have any pictures or documents associated with him?
Added by * on 11 December 2005.

I love this web site. It has shown me more about the town my mom and family are from. thanks
Added by * on 26 February 2006.

Hello,
I am researching the Dingwall famlies, who I believe married Ross lasses many times.

My John Dingwall came from around Dingwall, Rosshire, and served in the 88th Regiment of Foote, from 1759 - 1763, at which time he was interred into the colonia at Strelitz Perthshire. I have his musters details from Strelitz, which confirm is place of birth, his age being 29 years old and married with no children. This document would have been written between 1764 and 1767. I am seeking advise as to how I can confirm his parentage. I have transcribed the OPR'S for Tain and Fodderty, and awaiting the Dingwall film.
I have also reviewed the Sasine Indexes for Ross, Cromarty, Sutherland and Aberdeen.

Many thanks

ANNE

I am wondering if anyone knows if Patricia Burnley Ellison, second wife of Sir Charles ever actually lived at Balnagown castle after their marriage in l901 in US?
Added by * on 16 March 2006.

Patricia Ellison certainly came to Balnagown but I don't think she spent much time there. She had asthma and preferred a warmer climate! Sir Charles himself visited infrequently as his business interests often kept him on the other side of the Atlantic.
Added by * on 17 March 2006.

Thanks to Estelle Quick for her response to my query concerning whether Patricia Ellison spent much time at Balnagown. It is most helpful.

Hi - I am desperately seeking some information on my grandmothers side of the family. Her name was Mabel Ross (when she married it became Mabel Niclasen), born around 1912 time, and lived in Tain with her family. She left to serve in the WAF in London during the Second World War and never returned, having seemingly cut off contact with everyone. I think her father was called Charles. I know this isn't much but i'd be so grateful for anyone who thinks the name rings a bell. Many thanks

Do you have a Family History Society? My grandmother was Williamina McKay of 9 Main Street (Mid Street) Inver. I find it difficult to trace this through because I am not familiar with the area.
Added by * on 03 June 2008.

As far as I know, Isobel, there is no Family History Society as suc in the area. However, we do try to help with family enquiries at the museum. If you Email us (info@tainmuseum.corg.uk) with as much information youhave about your grandmother we will try to help.

I have a transcript of a document pertaining to one Jno. McKilligin Surgeon in Tayne Dec. 20th 1735.
It is to one Alexander of Pitcalny.
Can anyone shed any light on this document and do you have a facility to upload the transcription?

Added by * on 17 September 2008.

There is another John McKilligin bill at www.tainmuseum.org.uk/Documents/Pitcalnie%20papers/1737%20Doctor's%20bill.pdf. The museum may also have the original from which your transcript is taken. Earlier in the 18th c there was a surgeon apothecary in Inverness called George McKilligan who was surely connected to our man. Are you also related?
Added by * on 24 September 2008.

James McKellican and I have come to the conclusion that the transription he has originated from the one posted on this website, so is the same bill.
